Monastery Of The Maidens And The Boys

There lies the most beautiful example of the rock monastery on the left on the entrance of Göreme Open Air Museum.

The monastery church which includes red iconoclastic ornaments, has four pillars, transverse vault, and cross plan, is on the third floor. refectory, kitchen and cellar are the units side by side on the ground floor and unfortunately damaged. Also, there is a hidden room in which there lies niches on which the icons are probably hanged. it is very hard to climb that room. The rooms and divisions in the monasteries are linked to each other with tunnels and there are some round and heavy door-rocks to facilitate the defense in case of an attack by enemies. On the right of the entrance is the boys monastery. Like maidens monastery, it is carved out of a single rock black with the same purpose and plan.

The church, the refectory, the kitchen, the cellar, the cript and the other divisions are planned and designed to meet the daily needs of the people living in them.
