Church Of St. Barbara, Barbara Church

It is a small church with two pillars carved out of the same rock as Elmalı Kilise. Ornaments made by red ocher have been protected as the wonderful examples of iconoclastic period (725-846) and have not been covered by frescoes with mortar as in the other churches.

Church of St. Barbara is an important evidence for it represents the Christian way of life in a period in which all icons are prohibited. Religious believes and sense have come to existence with red ornaments when tried to be suppressed, and they showed their rebellion against such a pressure by explaining their wishes with these symbolic figures.Af ter the iconoclastic period, St. Barbara, St. George, St. Theodor have been painted directly on the wall and a big figure of Christ has been painted on the apse.
