The first definite findings about the life in Gelveri began with Christianity. But obsidion and pieces of pots and pans found at this location have proved that there was life at this place in the Paleolithic Age. Afterwards, Güzelyurt was a country for the Asur Trade Colonies, the Hittites, the Meds, the Perisans, the Cappadocia Kingdom, the Roman Empire, the Byzantines, the Seljuks and the Ottomans.

The importance of Güzelyurt in history began with Christianity, with the father and the son Gregorios. The ideas that were put forward by Saint Gregorios Teologos (the son) were the cause of a new religious opinion af ter hundreds of years. The letters he wrote were the first of sung together were the first of their kind in church music history.


Ther religious system during the last days of the Ottoman Empire provided a base for such a strong economic system, that special permission was granted to the church to print money. The 4.5 kilometer long Monastery valley has in the past housed a monastery, many churches and thousands of people. it is said that the first monastery life began here in the third and fourth centuries.

It can be said that today's Güzelyurt within the Cappadocia regano with its undergorund cities, buildings carved in rock, traditional Byzantine-style buildings, churches, the Manastır valley and "Fairy chimneys" carry all the characteristics of Cappadocia, and is a place that must be seen from the historical and touristic point of view.
